An abortionist accused of supplying illegal abortifacient drugs in Quiapo, Manila was arrested Wednesday in Tondo, Manila.
Chief Inspector Fernando Opelanio, head of the District Police Intelligence Operations Unit, said police arrested Deonila Montibon, 59, in a makeshift clinic in Herbosa, Tondo.
Authorities said they found various medical instruments and abortifacient drugs in the clinic. One of the drugs found in the clinic is the banned drug Cytotec, which is used to induce premature labor.
Also found in the clinic was Montibon's record book, which identified all her clients and their "prescriptions" after the operation.
Opelanio said Montibon's clients sometimes paid as much as P5,000 per abortion. He said Montibon's clients are usually referred by sellers of abortifacient drugs outside the Church of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila.
One of Montibon's clients identified only as Myrna said she almost terminated her pregnancy because she had already given birth to five children. She said, however, that she changed her mind after Montibon offered to find an adoptive parent for the child.
"She said that since I was already near term, I could just give birth and give up the child for adoption," she told ABS-CBN.
Police said Montibon will be charged with violating the Revised Penal Code, which bans abortion.
A Guttmacher Institute study published in 2005 said an estimated 473,400 women had abortions in the Philippines in the year 2000.
