Father of fractal geometry dies from pancreatic cancer
Benoît Mandelbrot passed away a few dayes ago on October 14, 2010. The wold famous mathematician was a pioneer in the field of fractal geometry, the first broad effort to quantitatively investigate the notion of roughness. He was fascinated in both the development and application of fractals, which he also showed could be used elsewhere in nature.
The fractal geometry he developed would be used to measure natural phenomena like clouds or coastlines that once were believed to be unmeasurable. Fractal equations also help Hollywood computer artists create more realistic landscapes and doctors measure irregularly shaped red-blood cells to develop better medication
